Ruby is a deep, pinkish-red gemstone. It is one of the densest-looking stones in the family: much of its light is held back, so the red reads as a solid, rich body, while bright reflections play across the polished surface.
Settings
- Color crimson with a pink lean: the classic ruby red.
- Transmission 0.7: lower than most crystals. Only part of the background shows through, so the stone looks deep and saturated rather than glassy. Raise it for a lighter, pinker stone; lower it for a darker, almost opaque ruby.
- IOR 1.76: the bending of real ruby, well above glass, so the view through it is clearly distorted.
- Env Map Intensity 2: strong reflections, which give the stone its brilliance.
- Roughness 0.02 with Clearcoat 1 and Clearcoat Roughness 0: almost perfectly sharp, with a mirror-polished outer layer.
- Thickness 0.4: a medium-depth stone.
Ruby and Sapphire are tuned almost the same way, as they are the same mineral in nature; the colour and a slightly lower Transmission are what set ruby apart.
Use it for
Jewellery and luxury product visuals, romantic and Valentine scenes, fantasy relics and magic gems, red logos and lettering that should feel precious, and festive decorations. It looks richest against a light or neutral background, with bright lights to fire up its reflections. Set it alongside Gold for a classic pairing.
