Object Effects
Effects you put on any 3D object: exits, moves, idle motion, dissolves, surface changes, glows and trails, fired by a click, hover or action.
Object effects are things you do to an object: send it out of the scene and bring it back, give it a move, keep it gently in motion, turn it into something else, change what it is made of, light it up, or leave a trail behind it. They work on any regular object in a scene and on the individual parts of a 3D model, and you decide when they happen.
When they run
- From an interaction: a click, the cursor entering the object, or the cursor leaving it. Many effects toggle, so a second click reverses them.
- From an action, the studio's steps that can apply an effect and later revert it, so several objects can react together.
- Held on the object, so it keeps running: a glow, a float, a trail.
The groups
- Enter & exit: take the object out of the scene and bring it back. Blast off, Swirl away, Vortex drain, Leaf fall, Pop, Drift up, Slingshot, Warp, Knock away, Turn away, Fly-by, Whoosh and Slam.
- Moves: one move, then back to rest. Jelly, Flip, Spin and Grow.
- Ongoing motion: keeps moving while it is on. Float, Sway, Bounce, Wobble, Pulse, Shake and Rotate.
- Transform away: the object becomes something else as it leaves. Shatter, Dissolve, Ember ash, Sand erosion, Curl smoke, Ink bloom, Flock, Liquid metal, Voxelise, Unweave, Petal peel, Particle swarm, Teleport, Portal, Hologram scan, LiDAR scan, 3D print and Silk drape.
- Surfaces: change what the object is made of. Metalize, Frost, Petrify, Heat cracks, Kintsugi, Rain beads and Ivy.
- Light: Glow and Rim light.
- Trails: left behind wherever the object moves, and they combine. Afterimage trail, Long exposure, Chromatic echo, Light streaks, and Smoke, Ash, Sand, Hologram, Voxel, Shatter, Ink, Frost, Wireframe and Bubble trails. Add one to any effect that moves the object.
Settings
Each effect has its own settings in the studio, shown with their defaults: how long it takes, how far it goes, which direction, what colour. Some settings only appear for the style you pick, so the panel stays short.
How to choose
- Page transitions and scene changes: Enter & exit, or Transform away when the exit should be memorable.
- Buttons and hover states: a Move or a Light effect, such as Jelly or Glow on mouse enter.
- Idle life for a hero object: Ongoing motion, a slow Float or Sway.
- Product stories: Surfaces, to show a product turning to metal, frosting over or mended with gold.
- Motion with character: a Trail on any exit, such as Long exposure on a Fly-by or Smoke trail on Blast off.
Because effects work on the parts of a model too, one click can make a single component glow, spin or fly off while the rest of the model stays put.
Enter & exit
Swirl away
Spiral the target up into a vortex until it vanishes — reverting spirals it back into place
02Blast off
Crouch, then launch straight up and out of the scene — it comes back with a powered landing: falls in, brakes hard, hovers, touches down
03Vortex drain
Caught by a whirlpool: it spirals in and down, spinning faster as the orbit tightens, and drains away — reverting flings it back up out of the funnel
04Leaf fall
A gust lifts it and carries it away, gliding side to side and rocking like a falling leaf — it comes back fluttering down and settles softly
05Pop
Inflates and wobbles under rising pressure, then bursts to nothing — it pops back out of nothing and rings down
06Drift up
Lifts away like a balloon let go — rising faster and faster, drifting and swaying in a calm wind; it sinks back down and settles with a bob
07Slingshot
Pulled back on an elastic, then let go — it snaps forward and flies off stretched; it flies back in and is caught by a spring
08Warp
Charges, then stretches along its heading and jumps away in a blink — it shoots back in, snaps out of the stretch and jiggles to rest
09Knock away
Struck from the side: it flies off on an arc, tumbling by where it was hit — tall things tip, flat ones skim; it is thrown back in and lands with a hop
10Turn away
Turns like a card and vanishes edge-on — it turns back into view from a sliver
11Fly-by
Takes off, banks and flies past the camera — it comes back from behind the camera on the other side and sets down in place
12Whoosh
Streaks through its own spot again and again, each pass crossing the last, then brakes into place; it leaves the same way, in reverse
13Slam
Hangs above its spot, winds up and slams down — squash, hop and rattle; it leaves by slamming down through the floor
Moves
Jelly
Squash and wobble like soft rubber, keeping its volume — settles back to rest
02Flip
Crouch, jump and flip in the air, landing with a squash
03Spin
Turn the target a full turn (or more) about its own axis, landing where it started
04Grow
Scale up (or down) and stay — settles with a small overshoot; switching off brings it back
Ongoing motion
Float
Hover in the air — a soft bob that never quite repeats, drifting and banking a little
02Sway
Rock gently about its base, like something tall in a light wind
03Bounce
Hop on the spot — a real arc with a squash on every landing
04Wobble
Lean round in a circle, like a top that is settling — standing on its base
05Pulse
Swell and settle — a slow breath, or a double heartbeat
06Shake
Tremble on the spot — smooth, nervous noise in position and roll
07Rotate
Turn steadily about its own axes — spins up, and coasts to a stop facing the way it started
Transform away
Dissolve
Burn any 3D object away along a glowing edge, then grow it back. A dissolve effect for clicks, hovers, entrances and exits.
02Ember ash
Burn a 3D object to charcoal and pale ash that the wind blows away in flakes, then un-burn it. A realistic fire exit effect.
03Shatter
Crack a 3D object along a glowing front and break it into tumbling shards that fall away, then reassemble it on reverse.
04Sand erosion
Turn a 3D object to sand that crumbles grain by grain into a mound, or keep it as a sand sculpture. Reverse pours it back up.
05Curl smoke
Turn a 3D object into soft smoke that swirls away in eddies, or keep it as living smoke in its own shape.
06Ink bloom
Bleed a 3D object into fine curling ink filaments, like a drop of ink in water. Dark on light, made for pale scenes.
07Flock
Turn a 3D object into a flock of birds that takes off and flies away, or stays perched in its shape. Reverse flies them home.
08Liquid metal
Turn a 3D object to polished chrome and melt it into a rippling pool, or keep it as chrome. Reverse pulls it back into shape.
09Voxelise
Digitise a 3D object into lit cubes that peel off and float away, or keep it as a voxel model. Reverse clicks the cubes back.
10Unweave
Redraw a 3D object as glowing contour threads that unravel into a point of light, or keep it as a thread sculpture.
11Petal peel
Peel a 3D object into flakes that flutter to the ground like leaves, or keep them lifted like raised scales.
12Particle swarm
Break a 3D object into its own coloured particles that swirl in a vortex around it, or keep it as a particle cloud.
13Teleport
Draw a 3D object into a point of light and send it up a beam, or keep it charged under the beam. Reverse beams it back down.
14Portal
Sweep a ring of light through a 3D object and send it through: electric arcs, a rune ring, an event horizon or a tech gate.
15Hologram scan
Scan a 3D object into a glowing hologram with a sweeping plane of light, then switch it off, or keep it as a hologram.
16LiDAR scan
Sweep a laser across a 3D object and turn it into a scanned mesh and point cloud, like real LiDAR capture.
173D print
Print a 3D object layer by layer like an FDM printer, with a hot nozzle and glowing layers, or show its slicer preview.
18Silk drape
Drop a silk sheet over a 3D object that drapes and collapses as it vanishes. Reversed, it is the magician-style unveiling.
Surfaces
Metalize
Pour molten metal over a 3D object and leave it polished gold, silver, chrome, copper, bronze or titanium. Reverse melts it off.
02Frost
Spread faceted ice with glinting crystals over a 3D object, lit like a real material. Reverse thaws it.
03Petrify
Turn a 3D object to weathered granite, like a statue, with its details still readable. Reverse brings it back to life.
04Heat cracks
Crack a 3D object with glowing lava seams that sink into the surface and char it, while the glow breathes. Reverse cools it.
05Kintsugi
Crack a 3D object and mend it with flowing gold seams, after the Japanese art of kintsugi. Reverse draws the gold back.
06Rain beads
Bead a 3D object with water drops that catch the light, some sliding down in wet trails. Reverse dries it.
07Ivy
Grow ivy over a 3D object: vines creep along its real surface and leaves unfurl. Reverse withers it away.
Light
Trails
Afterimage trail
Leave fading glassy copies of a 3D object along its path whenever it moves. A motion trail you add to any move.
02Long exposure
Smear a moving 3D object into one continuous streak of faint copies, like a long-exposure photograph of the move.
03Chromatic echo
Three coloured copies of a moving 3D object a beat apart: an RGB fringe when it moves fast that adds back up to white.
04Light streaks
Crisp light ribbons drawn from points spread over a 3D object, tracing its path as it moves. A light-painting motion trail.
05Smoke trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies of itself that turn to smoke in its shape, billow up and evaporate.
06Ash trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies that burn from within along a glowing ember front and are gone.
07Sand trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies that fall apart into grains, pouring down into a little heap on the floor.
08Hologram trail
A moving 3D object leaves hologram copies of itself that glitch out band by band.
09Voxel trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies made of cubes that drop from the top, tumble and shrink away.
10Shatter trail
A moving 3D object leaves glassy copies cut into shards from its own triangles, drifting apart and fading.
11Ink trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies that swirl into ink in water and tear into fine filaments.
12Frost trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies that frost over, crack open along the crystals and melt away.
13Wireframe trail
A moving 3D object leaves copies drawn as its real mesh edges, each line retracting into its middle.
14Bubble trail
Soap bubbles form over copies of a moving 3D object, then rise, wobble and pop, each with a sliding soap-film sheen.
