Text for Three.js & React Three Fiber

Animated 3D text looks: handwriting, neon tubes, burning paper, embroidery, liquid metal and more, each with its own draw and erase.

Text objects put words in a 3D scene with an animation built in. Type your words, choose a Font, and the text draws itself on in a look: written by a pen, lit like neon, burnt away, stitched in thread, or traced by spinning circles. For solid letters with depth that take any material, use 3d Text from the mesh family instead.

The looks

  • Plain: flat, crisp text with a weight setting, an optional outline and soft edges, for labels, captions, prices and menus.
  • Hand-made: Handwriting, where a pen writes in single strokes and the ink dries from wet to matte; Ink Bleed, where fountain-pen ink feathers into paper fibres; Chalkboard, with chalk dust and smudged erasing; and Embroidery, with satin, stem stitch and French knots on linen.
  • Light: Neon Tube, which stutters on and settles into a steady hum; Plasma Discharge, with a white-hot arc and forking streamers along the letters; and Light Painting, written like a long-exposure photo of a sparkler.
  • Materials: Liquid Metal, letters as puddles of mercury reflecting a studio; and Frost Growth, with hoarfrost crystals growing over the outlines.
  • Storytelling: Burn Away, paper letters that burn along their strokes to char and ash; Constellation, where the strokes become a star chart; and Fourier Sketch, where each letter is traced by a chain of rotating circles.

Draw, erase and playback

Every look shares the same controls for how text arrives and leaves. Draw sets how it appears (Pen, Trace, Both ends, Wipe, Radial, Scatter, Dissolve, Fade or Off) and Erase how it goes (Fade, Reverse, Wipe, Radial, Scatter, Dissolve, Trace, Both ends, Pen, Cut or Off), each with its own duration, easing and stagger between letters. Play on load starts the draw when the scene starts. Loop repeats the cycle with a Hold on the finished text and a Hidden pause between rounds, and Yoyo plays the cycle forward then back. A new line in the Text box starts a second line.

All looks use the same fonts: clean faces like Inter, Montserrat and Bebas Neue, serifs like Playfair Display and Lora, and handwritten faces like Caveat, Kalam and Dancing Script.

Choosing a look

  • Titles and hero lines: Neon Tube, Liquid Metal, Light Painting.
  • Signatures, invitations and personal brands: Handwriting, Ink Bleed.
  • Menus, classrooms and hand-made brands: Chalkboard, Embroidery.
  • Science and education: Fourier Sketch, Constellation.
  • Dramatic reveals: Burn Away, Plasma Discharge.
  • Winter campaigns and cold brands: Frost Growth.
  • Interface labels and prices: Plain.

Because the draw and erase are part of the object, text works well as a scene's opening line or as the reveal at the end of a scroll.

01

Plain

Flat solid text from the font outlines with a weight axis, an optional outline and soft edges, anti-aliased from a signed distance field. Use for labels, captions, prices, menus and titles.

  • plain
  • label
  • caption
  • solid

02

Handwriting

A pen writes the text in single strokes, slowing in tight curves where the ink pools and drying from wet sheen to rest colour; a faint sheen drifts over the dry ink. Use for signatures, titles and invitations.

  • handwriting
  • ink
  • pen
  • stroke

Neon Tube

Letter outlines as glass neon tubing: a gas discharge ignites each contour, stuttering before it settles into a steady hum with slow breathing and the odd micro-dip. Use for signs, nightlife and retro titles.

  • neon
  • tube
  • glow
  • sign

04

Fourier Sketch

Each letter is traced by a chain of rotating circles whose radii are its Fourier coefficients; more terms sharpen the form, and glints keep circling the finished contours. Use for science, math and generative titles.

  • fourier
  • epicycle
  • circles
  • sketch

05

Frost Growth

Dendritic hoarfrost nucleates in competing crystal grains on the letter outlines, each with its own six-fold lattice and bright boundary seams, then throws prismatic glints. Use for winter, cold-brand and fantasy titles.

  • frost
  • ice
  • crystal
  • dendrite

Plasma Discharge

Electrical breakdown along the letter contours: a white-hot arc channel with a violet halo, fractal streamers forking outward, current pulses and breathing branches. Use for sci-fi, energy and tech titles.

  • plasma
  • electric
  • lightning
  • lichtenberg

Burn Away

Letters cut from singed cream paper with smouldering embers; the erase is a combustion front travelling along the strokes leaving glowing edge, cracked char and ash. Use for dramatic reveals, titles and storytelling.

  • paper
  • burn
  • fire
  • ember

Light Painting

A long-exposure photograph of a handheld light writing in the dark: trail brightness follows 1/pen speed, colour cools from hot to warm, and a sparkler throws ballistic sparks. Use for night-photo titles, signatures and festive reveals.

Constellation

Pen strokes become a planetarium star plate: blackbody-coloured stars with Kepler binaries, tapered chart lines and faint dust stars. Use for space, astronomy, night-sky and elegant title cards.

Ink Bleed

Fountain-pen ink soaking into fibrous paper: a wetting front feathers along the fibres, dye separates into a coloured fringe and dries to a darker rim. Use for letters, journals and artisanal titles.

  • ink
  • bleed
  • paper
  • fountain-pen

Liquid Metal

Letters as puddles of mercury: a surface-tension meniscus mirrors a drifting studio with Fresnel chrome reflections and slow ripples. Use for premium logos, tech and product titles.

  • chrome
  • mercury
  • liquid

Embroidery

Hand-embroidered lettering that picks satin, stem stitch, couching and French knots per stroke, with silk thread sheen under a moving light on puckered linen. Use for monograms, heritage brands and textile titles.

  • embroidery
  • satin-stitch
  • thread
  • silk

Chalkboard

Single-stroke chalk on slate: pressure-dependent deposit on a fixed grainy board with powdery halo, falling dust at the pen and a felt-smudge erase leaving ghosts. Use for classrooms, menus and hand-made titles.

  • chalk
  • chalkboard
  • slate
