Effect
Murmuration
A starling murmuration: thousands of boids with topological neighbours swirl around a drifting roost, folding into dense, wave-like sheets. Use for dusk, wildlife, flocking, atmospheric scenes.

Murmuration fills the sky around an object with a flock of starlings: thousands of small birds swirling as one body, folding into dark, dense sheets and opening out again. Waves of light and shade ripple through the flock as the birds bank together.
How it works
Each bird follows three simple rules: keep a little distance from its neighbours, match their heading and stay close to them. Like real starlings, a bird watches its seven nearest neighbours rather than every bird within a fixed distance, and that is what lets a turn started by a few birds spread through the whole flock as a wave. The flock circles a roost point that drifts on a slow, never-repeating path, so the shape keeps turning over. An unseen raptor cruises through the airspace; birds near it scatter, tearing the sheets apart before the flock closes again. Birds bank as they turn and catch the light from above, which is why the flock flickers brighter and darker as a wave passes.
Settings
- Count: from a hundred to four thousand birds.
- Flock Radius: the size of the airspace the flock uses.
- Cohesion: the pull together; high values give tight balls.
- Alignment: how strongly birds match heading; it drives the waves.
- Separation: the push apart; high values thin the flock out.
- Bird Size and Color.
Use it for
Dusk skylines, wildlife films, atmospheric backdrops. The Flock object effect breaks an object itself into birds.
Code and API
Ready-to-paste React Three Fiber code and the 3DRise API are included in paid plans, inside the studio.
More effects
Firefly Swarm
Kuramoto-coupled fireflies drifting on a divergence-free flow: random blinking slowly locks into sync, with ripples of light rolling through the swarm. Use for night, garden, forest, magical scenes.
Dandelion Seeds
Dandelion seeds let go of the head one by one and drift away: a high-drag pappus gives them a slow terminal fall, and curl-noise wind with updrafts carries them. Use for meadow, summer, wish, gentle scenes.
Falling Leaves
Leaves drifting past the object, each one integrating the Andersen-Pesavento-Wang falling-plate equations, so they flutter, glide and tumble like real leaves.
Aura
Soft pulsing glow shell around the object. Use for magical, mystical, holy effects.
Aurora
Flowing color ribbons (northern lights). Use for polar, atmospheric, magical-curtain effects.
Black Hole
A ray-traced Schwarzschild black hole: gravitational lensing, photon ring and a Doppler-beamed accretion disk with relativistic jets. Use for space, gravity and cosmic scenes.
Works well with
Cloud
Animated procedural cloud materials for any 3D surface: bright, sunset, dawn, stormy and overcast skies with silver linings and light rays.
MaterialCirrus Fast
Fast-moving cirrus clouds with pronounced streaks and dynamic appearance
EffectCirrus Gentle
Thin, wispy high-altitude cirrus clouds with gentle movement and high transparency
EffectCirrus Thick
Thicker cirrus clouds with reduced transparency and more visible cloud structure
EffectDrift up
Lifts away like a balloon let go — rising faster and faster, drifting and swaying in a calm wind; it sinks back down and settles with a bob
Object effectDune Sea Dusk
Dusk desert sand material: tall dunes raked by a deep-orange setting sun, with ripples streaming on a strong wind. For cinematic desert scenes.
