Distort makes the surface of a shape move. A moving noise pushes every point of the surface in and out, so a sphere becomes a soft, living blob that constantly changes its outline. It is the classic animated blob seen on many landing pages.
How it works
Each point of the surface is pushed toward or away from the center of the object by a three-dimensional noise that drifts over time, so neighbouring points move together and the shape bulges in broad, smooth waves rather than jittering. Distort sets how far the surface is pushed (its effect grows quickly toward the top of the range), and Speed how fast the noise moves. The shape needs enough detail to deform: a sphere or a smooth model works well, a low-poly cube does not.
Settings
- Distort sets the strength, from 0 (no movement) to 1 (strong, lumpy deformation). The default is 0.5.
- Speed sets how fast the surface changes; the default is 2.
- Radius sets the base size of the shape before it is distorted; 1 keeps the original size.
- Color sets the surface color.
Use it for
Abstract hero objects, animated brand blobs, music visualizer shapes, organic product backdrops and playful loading screens. Combine it with a gradient background, or try Wobble for a twisting jelly motion instead of a breathing one.
More materials
Wobble
An animated material that twists the shape back and forth over time like jelly, with a Factor for strength and a Speed for tempo.
AdvancedReflector
A reflective surface for floors and stages: mirrors the scene above it, with blur, strength and depth fade controls.
AdvancedRefraction
A refraction material for gem-like objects: strong light bending set by IOR, with colored fringes from Aberration Strength.
AdvancedTransmission
Real-looking glass for any 3D object: the scene behind it bends through the shape, clear or frosted, with color fringing and animated distortion.
AdvancedWorks well with
Jelly
Squash and wobble like soft rubber, keeping its volume — settles back to rest
Object effectSlam
Hangs above its spot, winds up and slams down — squash, hop and rattle; it leaves by slamming down through the floor
Object effectBlast off
Crouch, then launch straight up and out of the scene — it comes back with a powered landing: falls in, brakes hard, hovers, touches down
Object effectBounce
Hop on the spot — a real arc with a squash on every landing
Object effectBubble trail
Soap bubbles form over copies of a moving 3D object, then rise, wobble and pop, each with a sliding soap-film sheen.
Object effectFalling Leaves
Leaves drifting past the object, each one integrating the Andersen-Pesavento-Wang falling-plate equations, so they flutter, glide and tumble like real leaves.
