Toon is the cel-shading material. Instead of a smooth gradient from light to dark, the surface breaks into a few flat bands of color with hard edges between them, the look of animated series, anime and comic panels. Rotate the object or move a light and the bands slide across the form.
How it works
The material works out how much light each point gets, then snaps that amount to a step. With no gradient map set, there are two tones: a lit tone and a darker shadow tone, split cleanly. Add a Gradient Map in the Textures tab and its strip of shades decides how many steps there are and where they fall, from a bold two-tone poster look to a softer four- or five-band shading.
Settings
- Color: the base color of every band.
- Gradient Map: the number and spacing of the shading steps.
- Emissive and Emissive Intensity: a flat glow, useful for eyes, lamps and signs.
- Normal and bump maps: add drawn-in detail that still breaks into hard bands.
- Opacity and Wireframe, as on every basic material.
Use it for
Cartoon characters and objects, children's and playful scenes, stylized product explainers, comic-book 3D text and any non-photographic illustration. Pair it with flat Basic shapes for outlines and backgrounds. For softer matte shading without hard steps, use Lambert.

Phong Material
Classic shiny 3D shading: soft diffuse color plus a sharp highlight. For retro 3D, glossy plastic and quick, light scenes.
BasicBasic Material
An unlit 3D material: flat color or image that ignores every light in the scene. For UI panels, flat graphics and exact brand colors.
BasicLambert Material
A purely matte 3D material with soft shading and no highlights. Light and fast, for low-poly scenes, terrain and backgrounds.
BasicPhysical Material
The most complete physically based 3D material: clearcoat, transmission, sheen and iridescence for car paint, glass, velvet and bubbles.
BasicStandard Material
The everyday physically based 3D material. Roughness and Metalness describe plaster, plastic, paint or polished metal.
BasicWorks well with
Truchet Grid
Smith quarter-circle Truchet tiles forming endless two-coloured loops; tiles turn to re-route the paths and comets travel them. Use for playful, retro and generative floors.
GridBounce
Hop on the spot — a real arc with a squash on every landing
Object effectBubble trail
Soap bubbles form over copies of a moving 3D object, then rise, wobble and pop, each with a sliding soap-film sheen.
Object effectBubbles
Rising translucent spheres that pop. Use for underwater scenes, carbonation, magical effects.
EffectBubbles
A bubble cursor: iridescent soap bubbles rise from the mouse pointer, drift and pop. For kids, playful brands, water and beauty sites.
CursorChalkboard
Single-stroke chalk on slate: pressure-dependent deposit on a fixed grainy board with powdery halo, falling dust at the pen and a felt-smudge erase leaving ghosts. Use for classrooms, menus and hand-made titles.
