Line effects are animated materials for lines: the wireframe of a shape, its edges, its outline or its contour slices. Switch an object to a line display (Edges, Profile, Wireframe or Contours) and give it a line effect, and every line becomes a strip of moving light: electric arcs, a snaking plasma beam, data packets racing along a wire, a burning solar filament, a dark rift in space.
How it works
In a line display, each line segment of the shape is drawn as a thin ribbon. A line effect paints that ribbon: it knows how far along the segment each point is and how far from its center line, so it can draw a beam that wanders across the ribbon, a bright head with a fading tail that travels from one end to the other, or sparks thrown off to the side. The ribbon around the drawn light is transparent, so only the effect shows. Line weight, set with the display mode, decides how wide each ribbon is and therefore how much room the effect has; heavier lines show more of the detail.
The variants
Five effects are drawn per segment in this way, each with its own colors and settings:
- Tesla: three jagged electric arcs with forks and a white-hot core.
- Serpent: an undulating, color-shifting plasma beam with glinting highlights.
- Ghost: green signal packets with fading trails and glitch flicker, like an old oscilloscope.
- Solar: a turbulent white-hot filament with flares and small jets.
- Void Rift: a dark tear with a bright edge, violet shimmer and drifting sparks.
Five more share a simpler engine with three main knobs (Speed, Intensity and Density) and built-in colors: Plasma cycling through saturated hues, Electric in flickering blue-white, Rainbow in full-spectrum bands, Lava in molten red and orange with yellow bubbles, and Frost in icy blue-white with sparkles.
How to choose
- Sci-fi tech and energy: Tesla or Electric for raw electricity, Plasma or Serpent for flowing energy.
- Data and signal themes: Ghost, which reads as information moving along wires.
- Space and cosmic: Solar for hot filaments, Void Rift for something darker and stranger.
- Elemental: Lava for fire, Frost for ice.
- Festive or holographic: Rainbow.
Start with the shape. A low-detail shape in Edges mode gives a few bold lines, ideal for logos and simple geometric forms; Wireframe on a detailed model gives a dense web that turns any object into a glowing hologram. Contours slice the shape into rings, which suits the flowing effects. Adding bloom in post-processing makes every one of these glow into the space around the lines.
All line effects
Tesla
Electric arcs along every line of a shape: three jagged, forking blue discharges with white-hot cores and rapid flicker.
02Serpent
A snaking plasma beam along every line, shifting between magenta, cyan and chartreuse, with shimmer and bright glints.
03Ghost
Glowing signal packets racing along every line with fading trails and glitch flicker, in phosphor green.
04Solar
A turbulent solar filament along every line: white-hot core, orange body, deep red edges, small jets and occasional flares.
05Void Rift
A dark rift along every line: a writhing black tear with a bright edge, violet shimmer and sparks drifting away.
06Plasma
Lines that cycle through saturated plasma colors and pulse in brightness. The default line effect.
07Electric
High-frequency blue-white lightning on every line: a hard core, a blue glow, fast flicker and strikes that come and go.
08Rainbow
Lines in full-spectrum rainbow color with slowly undulating interference bands, for holographic and festive looks.
09Lava
Slow molten lines in dark red, bright red and orange, with yellow heat bubbles flashing along them.
10Frost
Icy line effect: pale blue to white shimmer with crystalline sparkles, slow and calm.
More materials
Lava
Animated lava and molten-surface materials for any 3D shape: boiling cells, glowing cracks, dark spots and a hot rim, in eight color moods.
MaterialBasic
The six standard 3D surface materials, from unlit flat color to physically based paint, clearcoat and cel shading. How each one takes light.
MaterialCorona
Glowing halo materials for 3D scenes: a soft stellar corona that fades out from a core object and breathes slowly, in eight color moods.
MaterialAdvanced
Five advanced 3D materials: a mirror floor, refraction, see-through transmission glass, and two surfaces that distort or wobble the shape in motion.
MaterialCloud
Animated procedural cloud materials for any 3D surface: bright, sunset, dawn, stormy and overcast skies with silver linings and light rays.
MaterialCrystal
Twelve gemstone materials for 3D scenes: diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, amethyst, opal, jade, onyx and more, for any shape, model or 3D text.
MaterialWorks well with
Field Lines
Analytic magnetic dipole field lines around the object, with trapped particles bouncing between mirror points like the Van Allen belts. Use for sci-fi planets, energy cores, magnetism.
EffectForcefield
Hex-pattern energy shield around the object. Use for shields, barriers, sci-fi protection.
EffectHologram
Stacked holographic scan planes around the object, with scanlines, colour split, a grid, glitches and flicker. Use for sci-fi displays and futuristic UI.
EffectLichtenberg
A Lichtenberg figure grown by the dielectric breakdown model: a glowing fern of electricity creeps over the surface, holds, fades and regrows. Use for energy, sci-fi, power and lightning scenes.
EffectLightning
Jagged electric bolts strike down onto the object, flash and fade, each time along a new path. Use for storms, electricity and Tesla-coil effects.
EffectMagnetic Bottle
Charged particles weaving glowing, counter-rotating spirals over any shape, with bright rings where they turn back. The cursor pinches, drifts or heats.
