Sandstorm turns a volume of your scene into a desert dust storm, the kind known as a haboob. Thick, billowing dust hangs close to the ground and thins with height, walls of dust taller than the rest roll through on the wind, and along the ground sand grains hop in short streaks.
How it works
The dust is drawn as a continuous haze inside the object's volume, and objects inside it are hidden by exactly as much dust as lies in front of them. Gust fronts arrive one after another, each a steep leading wall with a long settling tail behind it, broken into lumpy, cauliflower-like edges. The dust colour tints everything seen through it, so a thick storm turns the whole view brown.
Settings
- Density, Height and Haze: how thick the dust is, how high it reaches, and how much fine dust hangs between the walls.
- Walls: the strength of the rolling dust walls.
- Grains and Grain Size: the sand hopping along the ground.
- Wind Strength, Wind Direction and Turbulence: the speed of the storm and how torn the billows are.
- Color and Shade Color: the dust in the light and in shadow.
The cursor can be a windbreak with still air behind it, a dust devil that lifts a glowing, spinning column, or a gust that shoves the dust aside.
Use it for
Desert, post-apocalyptic, Mars and action scenes. Set it over Dunes or Canyon.
Code and API
Ready-to-paste React Three Fiber code and the 3DRise API are included in paid plans, inside the studio.
More environment effects
Tornado
A standalone tornado as a Rankine vortex: a condensation funnel on a wandering, rope-like axis with helical streaks that wind by differential rotation and climb on the updraft, and ground dust spiralling in and swirling up a sheath around it. The cursor steers it, feeds it or bends it with a gust. Use for storm and drama scenes.
Rain
Rain streaks falling through the object's volume, pushed sideways by the wind and scattered by turbulence. Use for rainy, moody and weather scenes.
Rainbow
A single physical rainbow on its own: water dispersion and an Airy profile with supernumerary fringes, centred opposite the sun and seen through the object’s volume. The cursor sprays, clears or polarises it. Use for after-rain and hopeful scenes.
Snow
Snowfall with physical flakes: size-dependent terminal fall, helical flutter and tumbling dendrite crystals that glint in the sun, swept by travelling gusts and snow bands. The cursor is a gust, a shelter or a warm hand. Use for winter and weather scenes.
Thunderstorm
A thunderstorm without the rain (rain is its own object): dark storm curtains drifting on the wind, and lightning arriving as a Poisson process of multi-stroke flashes that light the curtains and the whole scene. The cursor calls a strike or clears the murk. Use for storm, noir and dramatic scenes.
Works well with
Cloud
Animated procedural cloud materials for any 3D surface: bright, sunset, dawn, stormy and overcast skies with silver linings and light rays.
MaterialDune Sea Dusk
Dusk desert sand material: tall dunes raked by a deep-orange setting sun, with ripples streaming on a strong wind. For cinematic desert scenes.
SandFerrofluid
A ferrofluid cursor: a glossy blob of magnetic liquid that grows spikes in the direction you move the mouse. For science, tech and dark luxury.
CursorKnock away
Struck from the side: it flies off on an arc, tumbling by where it was hit — tall things tip, flat ones skim; it is thrown back in and lands with a hop
Object effectPlasma Lightning
A lightning cursor: electric bolts strike in toward the mouse pointer, flash and fade, with a new shape every strike. For tech, gaming and energy brands.
CursorPlasma Whip
A plasma whip cursor: a glowing tube of plasma lashes behind the mouse, longer on fast moves. For energy, gaming and sci-fi scenes.
