A vignette darkens the corners and edges of the frame and leaves the centre bright. Photographers have used it for well over a century to hold the eye in the middle of the picture. In a 3D scene it frames the subject and quietly hides the empty edges where a scene can otherwise feel unfinished.

How it works

The effect darkens the finished picture by its distance from the centre of the screen, with a smooth falloff and no hard line. The centre is untouched and the darkening builds toward the corners.

Settings

  • Offset: how far the darkening reaches in from the edges, from a thin shadow in the corners to a tight spotlight on the centre.
  • Darkness: how dark the edges become.

Use it for

Almost any presentation: product shots, a 3D model on a plinth, moody interiors and night scenes, title cards. It appears in three of the five presets. Cinematic uses it with Depth of Field, soft bloom and grain; Stylized with a punchier grade; and Retro uses a heavy vignette with Sepia and grain for an old-photo look. Keep it subtle on bright, airy scenes, where strong dark corners can look dirty rather than dramatic.
