Chromatic echo follows a moving object with three copies of it a beat apart, in red, green and blue by default. When the object moves fast they split into a colour fringe, like a misaligned screen or a glitched video; as it slows they close in and add back up to white. It shows wherever the object moves, from an effect such as Whoosh, an animation clip, an ongoing motion or a drag, and draws nothing while it stands still.

How it works

The three copies are the object's own shape at its poses a fraction of a second ago, each drawn as a glowing shell in one colour. Because the three colours add up to white where they overlap, the fringe only appears where the object is actually moving. This trail looks back over a shorter time than the other copy trails, which keeps the echo tight. Kept on an object, it switches on before the entrance, stays through the exit, and combines with other trails.

Settings

- First echo, Second echo, Third echo: the three colours. Pick three that add up to white for the classic look. - Length: how far apart the echoes sit in time. - Strength: how bright they are. - Fade: how long it takes to switch on and off.

Use it for

Glitch and retro video looks, music and nightlife scenes, fast UI moments. Pair it with the Chromatic Aberration pass, or use the Afterimage trail for a single-colour version.
